Food Hospital - Low Fat Diet

Dairy products include milk products, cheeses, butters, yogurts and creams produced from animals such as cows, sheep, goats and buffalo. Some dairy products contain large amounts of saturated fat and therefore can be associated with obesity, raised cholesterol levels and conditions such as coronary heart disease if eaten in large amounts.

However many varieties are also available as ‘low fat’ alternatives where the fat content has been reduced that can help mitigate this risk. High fat foods are usually considered to have more than 20g of fat or 5g of saturated per 100g whilst low fat foods have less than 3g of fat or 1.5g of saturated fat per 100g.

It is a common misconception that low-fat dairy products are lower in calcium but this isn’t the case. They are also a good source of protein.
