Food Hospital - Mediterranean Diet
The Mediterranean diet is inspired by the cuisine of regions such as southern Italy, Greece, Spain and Morocco. It emphasises the consumption of foods that are low in saturated fats and high in fibre and monounsaturated fats.
It promotes fresh fruit and vegetables, olive oil, whole grains, fish and poultry (in moderate amounts), low amounts of red meat and minimal amounts of alcohol. On the other hand full fat dairy products, fatty meats and meat products (such as sausages and pies), biscuits, cakes and high cholesterol fats such as ghee, butter, lard and coconut milk should be avoided.
A Mediterranean diet tends to be rich in vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre and can help prevent chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer.
