Food Hospital - Gluten Free Diet
A gluten-free diet removes all foods from your diet that contain barley, rye or wheat (including graham flour, spelt, semolina, farina, durum, couscous and spelt).
Many basic foods such as meats, vegetables, cheese, potatoes and rice are naturally gluten free and can still be eaten. Other foods such as bread, cereals, cakes, biscuits, pies and pasta should generally be avoided. However many of these may be available in ‘gluten free’ varieties.
Gluten-free diets are used to treat coeliac disease and are also recommended for people suffering with Duhring’s disease (dermatitis herpetiformis) and wheat allergies. When embarking on a gluten-free diet, it is important to consult your GP or a dietician to ensure your new diet still includes all of the vital nutrients needed by the body.
