Food Hospital - Low Starch Diet

Starch is a complex carbohydrate that is the most common source of carbs in our diet. It is found in foods such as potatoes, rice, pasta, bread and cereals but not in foods such as meat and dairy products. For this reason low-starch or low-carb diets tend to be high in fat as they cut out carbohydrate foods such as wholegrains, fruits and vegetables in favour foods that may be higher in cholesterol. This makes them potentially unhealthy, raising your risk levels of conditions such as heart disease and stroke.

Starchy foods are a good source of energy as well as several important nutrients that the body needs. These include fibre, iron, B vitamins and calcium. Gram for gram they have less than half the calories of fat. Findings show that most of us are failing to eat enough starchy food that should make up around a third of our diets.
