Food Hospital - Low Protein Diet
A low protein diet requires people to reduce or avoid consumption of foods containing protein.
Meats and foods derived from animals such as eggs, and dairy products are typically high in protein as are nuts. Foods that are naturally low in protein include fruits, vegetables, pasta, potatoes, corn and baked goods such as bread and cakes (though there are exceptions to many of these).
Many foods are available in low-protein versions and, if you have certain medical conditions such as PKU (Phenylketonuria) these may be available at reduced cost on an NHS prescription.
However, avoiding protein rich foods may mean that you also miss out on other essential nutrients so it is important to discuss this diet with your GP or dietician. Often people following a low protein diet may need to take additional supplements in order to stay healthy.
