Patent for diabetes medicine

Here’s sweet news. An organic chemist from Chennai has patented two herbal medicines to enable diabetics to live a normal life.

“Unlike modern medicine, ayurvedic formulations activate beta cells of the pancreas to start secreting insulin and use natural hormone effectively. The herbs act together to strengthen liver cells, which, in turn, help build islet cells of the pancreas,” said K. Balasubramanian, organic chemist and pharmacologist.

“Allopathic anti-diabetic drugs destroy glucose in the body to bring down blood sugar or pump in artificial insulin that has side effects,” he claimed.

“Most diabetics are always tired and hungry as glucose is not converted into energy,” he added, stressing that most anti-diabetic drugs stripped hemoglobin from cells and made cancer.

A reputed Delhi Ayurveda unit is procuring Balasubramanian’s formulations. The medicines have successfully completed clinical trials and are now being tested by modern doctors at six nodal centres, including AIIMS.

Apart from anti-diabetic herbs, such as bilva and gymnema sylvestre, in use for over 3,000 years, plants including a rare lotus and a medicinal creeper have been included to bring down cholesterol levels and fight heart disease.

“In ancient India, diabetes was considered a curable metabolic disorder. Patients would live long healthy lives, not suffer complications such as retinopathy (loss of vision) or neuropathy (loss of sensation, leading to amputations),” said Dr Balasubramanian.

S. Thanikachalam, director of cardiology at SRMC and long-time champion of Indian medicines for diabetes, said, “We need to find the exact mode of action of these ancient herbal concoctions for them to be accepted by the Western world.”
